Emotion... An affective state often accompanied by specific physiological characteristics, with the power to impact thoughts and behaviours… They allow us to survive, feel content and create & sustain relationships with others.

3 Major Components of Emotion Cognitive component: the mental state, the conscious feeling of being happy, sad, angry or excited Physical component: the physical characteristics that accompany emotional reactions, such as tensed muscles, increased energy, a pounding heart and changes in body temperature. Behavioural Component:outward expression of our emotion (body postures, gestures, facial expressions, etc).

Heredity... We do inherit emotional capacities. We may be born with the capacity for excitement with the fight or flight reflex. Behavioural reactions may also be inherited. Facial expressions and physiological responses (e.g. increased heart rate) are innate to some extent. Facial expressions are universally understood in many cultures.

Learning... Emotional make-up determined by experience We follow models of emotional responses learned throughout life; In Western society men & women are taught to express emotions differently Generally men are taught from an early age to suppress emotions...

Maturity... emotions develop and change over a life time as people change roles, different emotions are experienced at different intensities Events in early childhood have a profound effect on our lasting emotional behaviour
