Digitized Attributes of Products UPC code

How does the UPC code work? UPC code: Universal product code is a digitized code for easily identifying products (by machines like scanners.)

How is it “coded”? Left most digits is a code for type of product: 0,1,6,7,8 are most products 2 shows a product with random weight 3 for pharmaceuticals 4 for local store products 5 for coupons

Next digits Next 5 digits indicate manufacture's identification 49000 for coke Next 5 digits are for the different products of the company identified by the previous digits Last digit is a check bit to make sure a manual entry of the digits is not in error

Where is the digitization? In the “bar code” that is machine readable. Also this kind of coding makes check out easy, efficient , error free and excellent support for automation and accountability.

What else can you do with UPC? Track inventory Track sales Track fraud Avoid mis-labeling price Consistency among many sellers Of course efficiency, speed at the checkout counter Quickly contain bad products/ trace their location
