Friction 01 January 2019 Objectives: To describe the causes and effects of frictional forces. Explain how a lubricant to reduce frictional forces.

Main Demonstrate the effect of frictional forces by attempting to drag a large box across a smooth surface with a forcemeter. Is the force making it easier or more difficult for the box to move?

What is friction? If you rub your hands together, they get warm because there is resistance to the rubbing motion. What is the name of this resistive force? It is called friction. What causes this force? Your hands might look smooth, but on a microscopic level they have rough surfaces, as shown in the photograph.
