What is cervical cancer? Some women can get an illness called cervical cancer. Cervical cancer affects the cervix which is down below, inside your vagina. We want to stop women getting cervical cancer as it is a serious illness. Cervical cancer is most commonly caused by a virus called the human papillomavirus (HPV).

What is Human Papillomavirus (HPV)? HPV is a virus, viruses can cause illnesses. There are no obvious signs that someone has HPV. HPV is very common, most people have the virus at some point in their lives. Direct skin to skin or genital contact can spread HPV types. What is a vaccination? A doctor or nurse can give you the HPV vaccination. Vaccines help to protect your body against a disease. A vaccine will make the body’s immune system produce antibodies that fight specific diseases.

How can I get vaccinated against HPV? Nurses will come to your school, these nurses are all really friendly. You will be asked to leave your lesson to come and see the nurse. The nurse will confirm who you are by your consent form and then give you the vaccination.

What will happen during the vaccination? Having a vaccination only takes a few minutes. The nurse will put a needle into the top of your arm. It may sting a little but not for long. Looking away can help.

How many times will this happen? You will need 2 vaccinations to get the best protection from HPV. Your first vaccination will be given during the Autumn term of Year 8 and your second will be given during the Summer term of Year 8. If you are over 15 years you will need 3 vaccinations but this will be explained to you by the nurse.

Will I feel OK after the vaccination? After the vaccination your arm might feel sore, stiff or go a bit red. Sometimes you might feel tired or have a headache. Some girls may have a bit of an upset tummy or feel hot for a while. If you start to feel unwell after your vaccination, please let a responsible adult know.

What do you need to do? The school nurse can only give you a vaccination with consent this is usually given by your parents or carer. Your parent or carer will need to complete and return a consent form. It is a good idea to wear some loose fitting clothing (short-sleeved school shirt or T-shirt under your shirt) when you come along to be vaccinated.
