Speaking Needs Preparing Simplification Engagement

Preparing Research Organize- create an outline Use note cards Practice - imagine yourself “there” - but not too much Think about what others in your company do

Simplification Limit presentations to 3 points (if persuasive) Use simpler words Make main points clear at the beginning and end Provide a preview of what you will talk about at the beginning Summarize your points in different parts of longer speeches

Engagement Be relaxed and speak clearly Beginning should make people interested -Demonstrate importance or - tell a story, joke etc… Say things that make you easy to follow Use clear transitions Use visuals

More Be relaxed and speak clearly Use Eye Contact Be/seem interested yourself

Voice Practice your speaking voice Vary the sound of your voice and speed Emphasize certain words -gives them greater meaning -is more interesting

Staying Relaxed Be prepared Convince yourself there’s nothing to fear Right Before: Take deep breathes Stretch your muscles Do not drink coffee or alcohol

Openers Used to get attention from the start Examples: “In China we say (一日不见,如隔三秋)…” “There once was a man named…” “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” “Do you want to buy a dream home?” -(in a speech about how)

More Openers “Our company has a problem.” “I am here today to talk to you about…” “How many people in this room….?” Then: Connect the opener to the main reason for speaking. And say that reason clearly.

Closing Should be clear when it starts Most easily remembered part Summarize (总结)(informational or persuasive) Talk about what should be done “Arouse their Enthusiasm” (刺激他们的激情)(Munter)

“Arouse their Enthusiasm” Examples: “We’ve done well this year, but I know that next year we can do even…better!” “Our company has produced thousands of products, but none offers as much hope as Widget 45!” “If every one of us can plant one hundred trees, we can make this town green!” “If we can really make our company green, we will say to companies everywhere: ‘It’s possible.”

Homework Read Munter Chapter 5 Think about speaking Practice your speaking voice

Speaking Clearly. The report is on the desk. I would like to give a speech now. Don’t be silly! The sun is always shining in Australia. I want to teach you a lesson.
