Effects of Human Activity on Water
As our population increases so does our demand on Earth’s resources.
Water Human activities that affect water quality Mining Pulp mills Dump sites Industrial activities Boating
pH pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution.[1] Pure water is said to be neutral, with a pH of 7.0 Below 7 is acidic Above 7 is basic Optimal range for most organisms is 6.5 to 8.2
Chlorine Added to city drinking water Kills bacteria Can react with some natural compounds to create dangerous compounds.
Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate Acts as a fertilizer for plants When levels are high, excessive plant growth affects water quality Enters water from human/animal waste, decomposing organic matter, and fertilizer runoff
Phosphate Acts as a fertilizer for plants When levels are high, plants grow and die quickly creating water quality problems
Dissolved Oxygen Aquatic animals need dissolved oxygen to live Below 2 or 1 ppm will not support fish Below 3 ppm are stressful to most organisms 5 – 6 are required for growth
