Tutor time activity: Key Stage 3 Topic: Democracy and human rights Democracy – you choose Produced by: Tom Jacob Princes Risborough School

Welcome to (teacher’s name) land Note to teacher – replace picture with a picture of yourself if you wish!

The rules…. You must all bring in your passports by next Friday as Emperor (name of teacher), (the supreme being!) has forbidden any travel outside of the (name of location) area. If you wish to travel to any other area, a permit will need to be applied for. Letters should be sent to Mrs (name of head teacher) to apply for a permit, but permission will only be granted for emergency journeys. Anyone found outside the grounds of the (name of school) without a permit will be imprisoned or shot!

Residents Anyone who is in residence in (name of location) will need to vacate their premises by (insert date). School pupils will be allowed to stay in a temporary camp in the Sports Hall but may only bring a small bag each. Parents and other relatives must leave the area altogether as space will not be allocated to them in the camp.

Religion We now have a new god, everyone must attend the Temple of (name of teacher) for at least one hour a day. All other gods are forbidden! School pupils caught worshipping in any other way will face imprisonment or the death penalty.

Education Only School pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 are entitled to a limited education (History according to {name of teacher} ). Years 10 to 13 will be expected to work around the (name of location) area and will not receive an education any more.

Work All school pupils from Year 10 upwards will be expected to work for Emperor (name of teacher), (amazing dress sense!). Any food, drink or personal items should be purchased from (name of another teacher)-approved stores in school grounds. Failure to comply will result in a prison sentence where you will work without wages.

Social life If you want to socialise with each other, you are allowed to meet for one hour at 10pm after attending the Temple of (name of teacher) for worship. Teachers will be present at all times and there will be a list supplied of topics to be discussed and those that are not allowed to be discussed. Relationships between males and females are prohibited unless they are arranged by (name of another teacher, aka Cupid).

The rules and rights of school pupils Emperor (name of teacher- all hail him!) will decide what is best for you. You will obey all the rules and regulations or you will face imprisonment or execution!

Will this ever happen? It has already happened in some countries and people fought to stop it happening here.

Education Hitler Youth The aim of Nazi education was to instill the motivation that would enable HY members, as soldiers, to fight faithfully for the Third Reich.

Work The Nazis used slave labour in concentration camps to keep their war machine going. Arbeit Macht Frei is a German phrase, literally "work makes (one) free“, meaning "work sets you free" or "work liberates“:  the infamous script in Dachau Concentration Camp.

Religion Jews in Europe were killed just because of their religion. Pic: Mauthausen, death camp, detail from crematorium.

And today? Extreme Religious groups such as ISIS believe that those who do not share their extreme interpretation of their religion should be killed. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimate that there are some 8.4 million children in slavery or practices similar to slavery today. Despite recent progress, 58 million children are missing out of primary school - war and conflict account for over half of these cases: www.sendmyfriend.org (Send My Friend to School campaign).

Holocaust Memorial Day Don’t stand by. The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 27 January 2016 http://hmd.org.uk/

Democracy in the UK The majority of people over the age of 18 (16 in Scotland) have a right to vote for the people that govern us. That will be YOU in a few years time. Make it count! Your vote gives you a chance to have a say in who will run the country. It is not a perfect system, but you now have an idea of the alternatives.

Vote for next week’s GLP tutor time activity Either… Distribution of food in the world / Gender inequality

Your vote counts! Take a class vote on which topic you wish to do next week. Then click on the link to make your vote. Your Vote counts! Click on the following link to vote for your chosen topic: (insert link to google form). Set up a google form (like the example below) to collect the votes, or just collect manually. https://docs.google.com/a/pearson.com/forms/d/1O7YzIYjwdk1JPEMefkRXpmR2wKuKB9Dh2FUyMXrEzXc/viewform

One last thing… Stretch and challenge: If you don’t vote in general elections, do you have the moral right to moan about how the country is run?
