Class Rules and Explanations English Composition 2 Class Rules and Explanations

First: Please call me Mister Main Please do not call me “Teacher”

Office Hours Email: timothy.main@gmail.com (do not use my Hotmail address) I am going to be very busy this semester, so if you want to see me you will have to go to my office at these times ONLY: Monday/Wednesday: 07:00 ~ 08:50 10:00 ~ 11:50 Tuesday/Thurs 08:00 ~ 11:00 If you come to my office at XX:51 I will send you away.

Textbook “English Composition 2” will be available in my office. ₩12,000 We will need a volunteer …

Grades These percentages are subject to change ... Homework 10% Midterm Exam 35% Final Exam Quizzes 15% Participation and Attitude 5%

Attendance Do not be late for class! I will lock the door when I start to take attendance, and then I will unlock it when I have finished. Late students can enter all at once, instead of disturbing the class during attendance or as the class begins. MY EARS ARE NOT GOOD! Honestly, I’m tired of explaining this to students 10 times every semester. Please sit quietly while I take attendance.

Homework Do not email homework: Do not put homework under my door: I do not use .hwp files. Hanmail (etc.) does not often ‘agree’ with gmail Printing your assignment is your job, not mine. Do not put homework under my door: Papers on my floor are considered garbage and I will throw them out without looking at them. You can submit it to the department office (58-318); I have a mailbox there and I will find it the next morning: As long as it is in my mailbox by 6:00 pm, I will get it as soon as the office opens the next morning. However, all homework must be completed by the beginning of class on the day it is due.

Homework A final warning .... Do not let me see you finishing your homework during class time! I hate that!

Graded Homework From time to time, I will grade your homework assignments. I will not tell you which assignments I am going to grade. Do your best work every time! If you see a number at the top of your assignment when I return it to you, that means I graded it (out of 10)

Quizes There will be two in-class quizzes this semester worth a total of 15% of your grade. I will give you more information about the quizzes at an appropriate time. The quizzes will be marked on the on-line calendar.

More Rules: Cell Phones: Cell phones are not allowed in my class. Turn the power off before you enter. Students whose cell phones ring/buzz/sending text messages, etc., during class will not earn their attendance mark for that class. Repeated violations will result in the student’s grade being reduced. This is a huge problem these days and I strongly believe that students should not have cell phones in class. You’ll be fine without it for 50 minutes! People lived for thousands of years without them, and you will survive, too!

Cheating I still have NEVER had a semester free of cheating! I have caught at least one cheater every single semester! That’s just ... Depressing. It makes me angry and sad.

Cheating You must sign the ‘Non-plagiarism Declaration’ It is your responsibility to understand it. It is your responsibility to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. If you have questions, ask me. I will be happy to explain it. You will not receive any warnings, and I will not accept any excuses! If you cheat, you will get a final grade of ‘F’!

This is Composition 2 This is English Composition Two. Two comes after One! This class is a continuation of Composition One. Composition 1 and Composition 2 are really the same class, split into 2 semesters. If you have not studied English Composition One, you need to think very seriously about why you are here. Why are you starting the class half-way through? It seems logical to me that students should take EC1 before EC2, but many do not, and it can cause many problems.

This is Composition 2 Students in EC2 are expected to remember and use the things we studied in EC1. (Both EC1 and EC2 if this is the essay class). If you studied EC1 (and EC2) and have forgotten everything we practiced last semester (which is surprisingly common!), you would be wise to review the material from EC1 before (and during) this semester.

This is Composition 2 If you have not studied Composition 1, I want you to stay after class today so that we can talk about your goals and what you will have to do to succeed in composition 2.
