English Composition 2 & English Composition: The Essay Class Rules and Explanations

Office Hours I am going to be very busy this semester, so if you want to see me you will have to go to my office at these times: Monday/Wednesday/Friday: 07:00 ~ 08:50 10:00 ~ 11:50 1:00~1:50 3:00~ 3:30-ish… Tuesday 07:00 ~ 9:50 Thursday 07:00 ~ 12:00

Textbook “English Composition 2” will be available in my office.

These percentages are subject to change ... Grades These percentages are subject to change ... But what do they mean? Homework 10% Attendance 5% Midterm Exam 35% Final Exam Quizes 15%

Attendance The attendance grade is calculated by giving students one mark for every class they attend. Late students will earn half of a mark (.5), and students who are more than 10 minutes late will earn no (0) attendance mark for that class. Each semester, there are around 35 attendance marks I don’t start taking attendance until after the ‘add/drop’ period is completed There are always a few holidays, etc.

Attendance Do not be late for class! I will lock the door when I start to take attendance, and then I will unlock it when I have finished. Late students can enter all at once, instead of disturbing the class during attendance or as the class begins. MY EARS ARE NOT GOOD! Honestly, I’m tired of explaining this to students 10 times every semester. Please sit quietly while I take attendace.

Homework A final warning .... Do not let me see you finishing your homework during class time! I hate that!

Quizes There will be three in-class quizzes this semester worth a total of 15% of your grade. I will give you more information about the quizzes at an appropriate time. The quizzes are marked on the on-line calendar.

Cheating I still have NEVER had a semester free of cheating! I have caught at least one cheater every single semester! That’s just ... Depressing. It makes me angry and sad.

Cheating You must sign the ‘Non-plagiarism Declaration’ It is your responsibility to understand it. It is your responsibility to understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it. If you have questions, ask me. I will be happy to explain it. You will not receive any warnings, and I will not accept any excuses! If you cheat, you will get a final grade of ‘F’!

This is Composition 2 This is English Composition Two. Two comes after One! This class is a continuation of Composition One. Composition 1 and Composition 2 are really the same class, split into 2 semesters. If you have not studied English Composition One, you need to think very seriously about why you are here. Why are you starting the class half-way through? It seems logical to me that students should take EC1 before EC2, but many do not, and it can cause many problems.

This is Composition 2 Students in EC2 are expected to remember and use the things we studied in EC1. (Both EC1 and EC2 if this is the essay class). If you studied EC1 (and EC2) and have forgotten everything we practiced last semester (which is surprisingly common!), you would be wise to review the material from EC1 before (and during) this semester.

This is Composition 2 If you have not studied Composition 1, I want you to stay after class today so that we can talk about your goals and what you will have to do to succeed in composition 2.
