DO NOW Please re-write in scientific notation 4,323,232? What are the five (5) standard parts of a formal lab report? What is the difference between autotrophs and heterotrophs? Give an example of each. Draw and label ATP.

Chlorophyll and Chloroplasts

What is the closest star to the Earth? Why is that star so important to life?

Light Energy WHAT ?!?

Light Spectrum

Chlorophyll is a Pigment What color is chlorophyll? What color(s) are absorbed? What color(s) are reflected? Why?

Chloroplasts

Chloroplasts: Where Photosynthesis Happens. Thylakoids: Flat bag shaped membranes, arranged in stacks. Stroma: liquid filled space around the thylakoid.

High Energy Electrons NADP+ : A molecule that accepts electrons from chlorophyll and carries them to places where sugars are built.

DO NOW What is NADP+ (describe)? How are thylakoids arranged? What are the products of photosynthesis? Where does photosynthesis take place?

The Equation 6 CO2 + 6 H2O light C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Products? Reactants?

Light Dependent & Independent

Light-Dependent Reactions A reaction of photosynthesis that uses light energy to make ATP and NADPH Light-Independent Reactions A reaction of photosynthesis that uses ATP, NADPH and CO2 to make sugars

Light-Dependent Reactions Photosystems: baglike membranes holding chlorophyll and proteins. They take in light and use it to add energy to electrons.

Photosystem II comes first ?!? Photosystem II: absorb light and release high energy electrons. They get passed down the electron transport chain a group of carrier proteins that pump positive ions inside the thylakoid.

Photosystem I comes second ?!? Photosystem I: absorb light and release high energy electrons. They get passed down another electron transport chain used to make NADPH

Light-Independent Systems – Calvin Cycle Calvin cycle: creates high energy sugars from ATP and NADPH

Light-Independent Systems – Calvin Cycle Reactants? Products? Where does the energy come from first? Can this occur at night?

Factors Affecting Photosynthesis What factors will affect photosynthesis? Why?

Factors Affecting Photosynthesis Light - How? Temperature - How? Water - How?

C4 Plants and CAM Plants C4 Plants – Allows CO2 into the Calvin cycle even when there isn't much available. Corn and Cane Sugar are examples.

C4 Plants and CAM Plants CAM Plants – Save water by taking air into leaves only at night. Examples are Pineapple bushes and Cacti.
