Expression and cellular distribution of multidrug resistance-related proteins in patients with focal cortical dysplasia  Halil Ak, Bahadir Ay, Taner Tanriverdi, Galip Zihni Sanus, Merih Is, Mehmet Sar, Buge Oz, Cigdem Ozkara, Emin Ozyurt, Mustafa Uzan  Seizure - European Journal of Epilepsy  Volume 16, Issue 6, Pages 493-503 (September 2007) DOI: 10.1016/j.seizure.2007.03.011 Copyright © 2007 British Epilepsy Association Terms and Conditions

Figures 1–3 (1) Neurons in dysplastic tissue showed immunopositivity with MDR1 (a) and particularly MRP1 (b) in a proportion of cases. On the other hand, no staining with MDR1 and weak staining in some cases were demonstrated in 10 control tissues. (2) Immunopositivity with both MDR1 (a) and MRP1 (b) in giant neurons of dysplastic tissue. (3) MRP1 staining in neurons of control tissue. Figures 4–7 (4) In eight patients, moderate to strong staining with MDR1 (a) in astrocytes was present whereas the vast majority of astrocytes showed immunopositivity with MRP1 (b) whilst No MDR1 staining was seen in 10 controls and only two of 10 controls were stained with MRP1 (one moderate and one weak). (5) Majority of patients also showed both MDR1 (a) and MRP1 (b) immunoreactivity in endothelial cells. In controls, only one case showed moderate MRP1 staining and MDR1 staining, mostly weak, was found in nine, consisting with the literature. (6) MDR1 immunopositivity in endothelial cells in control tissue. (7) Of the six focal cortical dysplasia with balloon cells, two showed MDR1 (a) and two showed MRP1 (b) staining.
