Lab Report Instructions

Lab Format Title - Description of the lab Purpose - Why? Materials-What? Procedure - How? Results - What did you find? Conclusion -What does it mean? Discussion - Apply to “real life”

Title HINT: Use this formula to create a scientific title. The Effect of ______ [IV] on _____ [DV] For example: The Effect of Exercise on Heart Rate

Purpose (AKA Introduction) Why are you doing the lab? What background information is there about the topic of the lab? List any definitions. What are the variables? Independent - what you modify/change Dependant - what you measure/observe Controlled - what you keep the same

Materials What materials did you use for the lab? List all materials in bullet form.

Procedure How will you carry out the lab? What is your baseline / control? The trial that you compare results to Independent variable is limited or removed Outline format (like a recipe) Diagrams, Sketches, Pictures help to clarify the steps to be taken

Results “Just the facts, ma’am.” Data, Observations, Factual information from the lab What happened in lab in each trial. Explain tables in words and also include a sketch of graphs, tables, and charts.

Conclusions Revisit your hypothesis and see if it was supported or not supported by your data. Why or Why not? What do your results mean? Back up with your data What did you learn?

Discussion Were your results accurate? Why do you think so? How might you improve the lab? How might you apply the information from this lab? What new questions do you have based on this lab?
