Workshop on MDG Monitoring Session 1 Coordination of national statistical systems and reporting mechanisms to international agencies Working Group nr 2

Additional agencies involved in data production or dissemination of MDG 4 & 5 Country Indicator Agency involved Involvement (collection, production, dissemination etc.) Albania MoH & NSO Yes Macedonia Turkey

Coordination of national statistical systems Challenges Lack of the main focal point for the MDGs at the national level Quality of the MDGs indicators, not agreed standards and definitions for some of the indicators Regular monitoring system of the MDGs Strategies to solve these challenges 1) Establish a Focal point for coordination of MDGs. Preferably to be the NSO. Improvement of the legal basis, enhancing the role of NSO as the main coordination body in the national statistical system. 2) Capacity building of the data suppliers on MDG related statistics (trainings/other forms of education) Trainings organised jointly with the international agencies. 3) Establishing a team from different data suppliers at national level responsible for MDGs (responsible for evaluation and monitoring of MDG indicator production)

Reporting of mechanism to international agencies Challenges Metadata Data gaps and data quality Focal point related to reporting of MDGs indicators and coordination of reporting. Strategies to solve these challenges 1) Establishing a metadata system at the national level (international agencies can help in strengthening of capacities related to metadata) 2) Increasing the capacities of data suppliers. Strengthening the sources of data (registers, surveys). Improvement of data flows. 3) Establish a Focal point for reporting of MDGs. Preferably to be the NSO.
