Wednesday 9/19/18 Notebook Entry: Scientists often use tools when making observations. What tools can you think of that a scientist would use? Display at start of class, give about 5 minutes to answer. You may have students share out answers if you like.

Examples of tools Ruler Magnifying Lens Microscope Temperature Probes

T. Trimpe 2008 http://sciencespot.net/ For the Build a Boat Challenge one of the tools we will use quite a bit is a ruler to make sure our boat meets the constraints and to record our design. So today we are going to review the metric system and measurement. Length T. Trimpe 2008 http://sciencespot.net/

English vs. Metric Units Which is longer? A. 1 mile or 1 kilometer B. 1 yard or 1 meter C. 1 inch or 1 centimeter 1.6 kilometers 1 mile 1 yard = 0.9444 meters 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters The Metric Mania page is an interactive notetaker for the students to fill out during the instruction. The red circles will appear when you click so I would encourage the kids to answer first before you click and the answer is revealed. Then have them fix their work if needed. Metric Units km m cm mm The basic unit of length in the metric system in the meter and is represented by a lowercase m. Metric Units 1 Kilometer (km) = 1000 meters 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters (cm) 1 Meter = 1000 Millimeters (mm) The Metric Mania page is an interactive notetaker for the students to fill out during the instruction. The red squares will appear when you click so I would encourage the kids to answer first before you click and the answer is revealed. Then have them fix their work if needed. Which is larger? A. 1 meter or 105 centimeters B. 4 kilometers or 4400 meters C. 12 centimeters or 102 millimeters D. 1200 millimeters or 1 meter

Measuring Length How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. The Metric Mania page is an interactive notetaker for the students to fill out during the instruction. Ruler: http://www.k12math.com/math-concepts/measurement/ruler-cm.jpg

Length Lab Complete the questions on the Length Lab Worksheet Turn in your paper when you are finished. If you have extra time you may work on other homework, read a book or draw quietly when you are finished.
