Heat energy Heat ENERGY IS HOW FAST PARTICLES (MOLECULES) ARE MOVING IN a substance or OBJECT. the FASTER THE PARTICLES ARE MOVING THE MORE HEAT. TEMPERATURE IS THE AVERAGE AMOUNT OF ENERGY OF MOTION OF EACH PARTICLE.

WARM VS HOT

temperature scales temperature IS TYPICALLY MEASURED ON TWO SCALES: CELSIUS AND FAHRENHEIT. SCIENTISTS OFTEN USE THE CELSIUS SCALE WHERE THE FREEZING POINT OF WATER IS 0°C. (32°F) boiling IS AT 100°C AND 212°F. WEATHER REPORTS IN THE UNITED STATES OFTEN USE Fahrenheit.

Celcius to Farenheit The equation °𝑪= 𝟓 𝟗 (°𝑭−𝟑𝟐) is used to find temperature in Celsius terms. (remember to work the numbers inside the parentheses first)

the transfer of heat HEAT TRANSFER is when heat ENERGY moves FROM ONE OBJECT or substance TO ANOTHER. (HOT object TO COOLer object) HEAT IS TRANSFERRED IN THREE DIFFERENT WAYS: RADIATION, CONDUCTION, AND CONVECTION.

radiation THE SUN'S RAYS ARE AN EXAMPLE OF HEAT FROM RADIATION RADIATION IS THE TRANSFER OF ENERGY THROUGH WAVES instead of contact. you CANNOT SEE RADIATION, BUT YOU CAN FEEL IT.

conduction This is heat being passed directly from one object to another through contact. For example, the heat in a frying pan can often travel up the handle to where you are holding it.

convection Convection is the transfer of heat by the motion of or within a fluid in liquids and gases (fluids) particles can freely move from one area to another. When liquids and gases are heated the movement becomes faster and the particles spread out, becoming less dense. Heated, less dense particles will rise and eventually cool as they move away from the heat source. These cooled particles will move downward and get closer to the heat source where the cycle starts over again.

convection

heating the troposphere Heat transfer causes convection currents. Convection currents move heat throughout the troposphere. Cooler air moving into warmer air can cause severe storms.
