Reviewing personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work

Unit 2 Learning Aim D Discussion 1. On one white board, identify scientific skills you have developed in the first three learning aims: -titration -colorimetry -calorimetry (cooling curves) -chromatography 2. On the second white board, identify skills you already had from high school/how you have developed these skills in the first three learning aims.

Unit 2 Learning Aim D – review personal development of scientific skills for laboratory work 1. Identify a skill you have acquired during unit 2. 2. Did you have any of this skill previously? How was this skill transferred to you? Have you transferred the skill to other units? 3. Analyse and make a judgement on your skill development. How does this skill compare with that possessed by your peers? 4. How can you improve. What steps do you need to take to improve? 5. Critically reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of this skill. Include feedback on this skill from a peer. 6. How can you develop and use this skill in future?

Include feedback on this skill from a peer. 6. How can you develop and use this skill in future?

Unit 2 Learning Aim D PASS IDENTIFY scientific skills developed in all practicals. Illustrate the transferability and development of skills by drawing on scientific skills you previously acquired. Hints: Look back at the practical sheets. Think back to high school practicals. Briefly: How have you transferred these skills to units 1, 3, 4 ? MERIT Analyse and make a judgement on your skill development in relation to your peers. Then recognise improvements that need to be made and steps that need to be taken to achieve them. Hints: Justify your skill development. Talk to your peers and compare your skills. Suggest improvements. DISTINCTION Critically reflect on strengths and weaknesses of your performance and skill development, drawing on feedback from teachers/peers. Potential for future progression? Hints: Strengths and weaknesses discussed for each skill by referring to feedback received frominterviewing peers. Use of more specialist equipment from a work experience placement?

Unit 2 Learning Aim D Things to think about in addition to practical skills Personal responsibility: Were your practicals at high school more or less independent (teacher led)? Personal responsibility: Take responsibility for completing tasks/procedures. Working to standards and protocols. Personal responsibility: Accepting responsibility for the quality of your own work. Accuracy of results and calibration of equipment at high school vs college? Personal responsibility: Safe working practices (PPE, fumehoods etc) Working with others: Communication and cooperation in the lab. Working with others: Giving and receiving constructive feedback. Working with others: Safe working practices (PPE, fumehoods etc) and behaviour in a lab at high school vs college? Professional practice: Identify, organise and use resources effectively to complete tasks Professional practice: recognise problems and apply scientific methods to identify causes and achieve solutions to problems. Development of confidence in practical work and how have you used these skills in other units? Improvements: what other equipment could you have used? Lack of equipment and facilities? Work experience to further develop skills?
