BU6019 Sustainable Entrepreneurship Special Interest Groups (2) …..And the “Holistic Approach”! - An interactive workshop

Re-cap on last session: To summarise: To form a Special Interest Group (SIG) you need to: Have a clear purpose for your SIG Conduct research and disseminate knowledge Hold group discussions on specific themes Organise events Write and produce publications Hold regular meetings for your members Decide how you will be structured (e.g. who is in charge?) Q: What Sustainable entrepreneurship SIG might you form?

It’s good to think! “Too many organisations are using enormous amounts of energy to reproduce the cost and quality advantage that global competitors already have” - Gary Hamel (2002)

Consider: Entrepreneurship and Strategic Planning: Where is the enterprise now? (audits) Where does it want to be? (Objectives) How will it get there? (Strategies) So… What areas of the process require sustainability action? Who/which departments should be involved? (everyone?) What are the benefits of “going green” (cost/benefit analysis)

Ghoshal’s 3 Ps Model Purpose – shared ambitions amongst staff Process – challenge performance and show management commitment People – develop, train and improve people and their way of thinking! Q: How useful is a PESTLE and SWOT analyses in terms of Sustainable Entrepreneurship? (Remember, Remember Action Plans to follow!)

Now, please carefully consider the following: “Many leading business … are revelling in the opportunity to put new product/service ranges on the market with “eco-friendly” statements – and a 20% mark up!” Q: In your opinion, are these enterprises taking advantage of consumers? Q: Are entrepreneurs pretending to be “eco-preneurs”, or simply covering the costs of Sustainable Entrepreneurship?

And now… Future solutions? Your “Sustainable Enterprise” Future Objectives Financial Forecast Marketing Plan Future capabilities Action Plans!!

Now – A group activity … but also consider: Self Study: Please have a look at: Dixon, E. A. and Clifford, A. (2007),Ecopreneurship - A New Approach To Managing The Triple Bottom Line. “Journal of Change Management”, Vol. 20, No. 3. (pp 326 – 335) Please also look at other journal articles and library text books. Q: What is going to help you with your assignment and also with “Management activities” within a sustainable enterprise?
