CHAPTER 12: PART 5 ELECTRICITY ELECTRIC CURRENT ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS
ELECTRIC CURRENT An orderly flow of negative charges carried by electrons. An electronic current is only possible if the free electrons are moving in the same direction.
TYPES OF CURRENTS DIRECT (DC) – an electric current in which electrons always flow in the same direction ALTERNATING (AC) – an electric current in which electrons flow in a back-and-forth motion
ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS An ELECTRICAL FUNCTION is the role played by a component in the control of transformation of electric current POWER SUPPLY CONDUCTION INSULATION TRANSFORMATION OF ENERGY CONTROL PROTECTION
POWER SUPPLY POWER SUPPLY is the electrical component that produces or supplies electric current in a circuit
CONDUCTION CONDUCTION is the function of any electrical component that can transmit an electric current from one part to another in an electrical circuit. (Metals make very good conductors)
INSULATION INSULATION is the function of any electrical component able to block an electrical current. (Rubber makes very good insulators)
TRANSFORMATION OF ENERGY TRANSFORMATION OF ENERGY is the function of any electrical component able to transform electrical energy into another type of energy. Light bulb transforms electrical energy to light energy
CONTROL CONTROL function is carried out by any electrical component that can open and close the circuit. Or control and limit the circuit.
PROTECTION PROTECTION is the function performed by any electrical component that can automatically interrupt the flow of electric current in an abnormal situation. FUSE BOX BREAKER BOX (burns the fuse – melts (shuts down when over when too intense) the tolerated limit)
