Welcome Parents of Marlins!! Warm-Up: Choose a BRIGHT colored card (located in middle of team) and write a tip on how to be successful in Language Arts. *Think about your journey in Language Arts: What do you wish you did more of or could have improved? What made you successful? *Place in TRAY in center of desk. 

Place books in chair tray, Binder in corner of desk Fill out Assignment Notebook Begin Warm-up which is located on the screen via PowerPoint 3—Begin Mini Lesson, Whole group 4 – Individual instruction 5—Last five minutes, clean up area and desk

Helpful Hints Discuss the importance of recording assignments and upcoming projects in the Wildcat Planner. Review Planner daily. Oversee your child’s organizational skills so that he/she learns to be responsible for: --bringing home the proper book and assignments every night. --placing completed assignments in the correct folder/binder --turning in assignments on time. --organizing locker.

The Million Dollar Question is…. How do I know if my child is on task? 2 ways: Homework website: Team Marlins- Google Site https://sites.google.com/a/ccs.k12.in.us/ms- gray-s-class/ Remind text messages will be sent from time to time for regarding homework and misc. reminders

AFTER SCHOOL STUDY HALL FREE After School Study Hall in Media Center: After School Study Hall runs Monday through Thursdays except when there is a school holiday the next day. Students report to the media center and are divided into 2 groups.   Desk workers go to a classroom and computer workers go to a lab. Three staff members monitor.  They assist and will help as needed.  It is not tutoring. The areas are meant to be quiet and controlled.  No group work unless a teacher writes a pass for a short term project. There is no advance sign up required; there is no charge. All students need to be picked up by car or take the late bus after 4PM. Discipline logs are kept.  Three strikes and you are out--timeline to be determined by the administration.

Expectations  The grading scale that will be used for this course is the standard Carmel Clay school district grading scale. Correct spelling/grammar is expected on all formal writing assignments. This can be found in your child’s planner. Grading will be 30% Reading Assessment, 30% Writing Assessment, 30% on Focus Standards (this could be homework, classwork, presentation, projects, etc.) and 10% on Word Within a Word (vocabulary and stems) and Magic Lens: Parts of Grammar/Sentence (Honors only) Classwork/Homework will play an important role in this class. In order to do well in this class, your child must turn in work because the classwork and homework will provide the base for the upcoming assessment. This will primarily be reading the core novel and continued writing practice. Sharing answers– All work is to be done on an individual basis unless otherwise specified. If the students are sharing answers, ALL parties involved will receive a ZERO.
