Three Levels of Questioning HOTS

LEVEL UP

THREE LEVELS OF QUESTIONING Level One: Literal Level Level Two: Interpretive Level Level Three: Thematic Level

LEVEL One: Literal Reading ON the line Fact based Who, what, where, when

LEVEL two: interpretive Reading BETWEEN the lines Inference based, implied in the text Answered after reading the text How, why

LEVEL THREE: thematic Reading BEYOND the lines Connects to the universal meaning Open ended requiring making connections Discusses abstract ideas Uses text as a guide to explore larger issues

Three levels of pigs Level One: Literal Level What did the pigs build? Level Two: Interpretive Level Why did the pigs choose different types of houses? Level Three: Thematic Level Why is the ability to postpone gratification an important life skill?

Three levels of Bears Level One: Literal Level Level Two: Interpretive Level Level Three: Thematic Level Remember each level builds upon the previous level. All three follow the same thread of thought.

Three levels of mockingbirds Level One: Literal Level What happened to Jem? Level Two: Interpretive Level How did Jem’s pants get returned to him? Level Three: Thematic Level Why should people look deeper before drawing conclusions about a person? Jem’s pants were caught on a fence fleeing from Boo Radley. Jem’s pants were neatly folded and returned to him presumably by Boo Radley. Drawing quick conclusions about someone based solely on superficial details is the worse kind of prejudice.
