Who are the Sikhs

Sikhs came to America over a 100 years ago. Sikhs came from a place in India called Punjab. Sikhs settled in California and New York.

Misidentification Sikhs are often mistaken as Muslims, they are not. Also sometimes mistaken as Hindus, but again not the case.

Sikhism the Religion Sikhism is the 5th largest religion in the world. Sikhs believe in one god “Guru Nanak” for all people, religions, and cultures. Sikhs believe everyone is equal. Sikhs believe that everyone should be loved and treated with respect ,no matter who you are.

Sikh Lifestyle Sikhs should work and live honestly. Sikhs should share with others. Sikhs should remember God everyday. Sikhs should remember what kind if person we should be.

The 5 “Ks” of Sikhism Kara- a bracelet they wear to remind them to do good deeds. Kirpan- the sword, which offers protection for you and anyone in danger. Kachera- long underpants, that remind Sikhs to have self-discipline. Kesh- uncut hair, represents spirituality and part of external identity. Kanga- wooden comb, reminds Sikhs to always be clean.

5 K’s of Sikhism

Sikh Turban 99% of people in US wearing turban are Sikhs. Sikhs must wear turban as part of their religious uniform. Helps them standout so they can help others. At time Sikhs match turbans to their clothes. Women wear them also.

Guru Granth Sahib Guru- means religious guide. During Sikh service Sikhs read and sing from the Guru Granth Sahib. It teaches Sikhs how to be kind, tell the truth, love and respect everyone. Basically their holy book.

Gurdawara Place to learn and pray Everyone is welcome Service usually on a Sunday They will have “langar”- a community meal for all.
