Hierarchy In order to perform the tasks necessary for life (breathing, eating, moving, reproducing) animals must organize their cells in levels of increasing complexity called a hierarchy
1. Cell The basic unit of structure and function of living things
2. Tissue Specialized cells working together to perform a function
3. Organ Different tissues working together to perform a specific task
4. Organ System A group of organs that interact with each other to perform a common task
5. Organism A body made up of tissues, organs, and organ systems, that work together to carry on the various tasks necessary for life
