To Summarise… Optical storage is the reading and writing of data to discs using a LASER Light is bounced off the disc to detect which bits are pits and which are flat These translate into 0’s and 1’s Data is written in a continuous spiral.

Homework Your instructions are on your worksheet… Write this down in your planners. Questions What is the size of the hard drive on your home computer or laptop? How much space have you used up on that drive? How many CD's would you need to back up your data? How many DVD's would you need to back up your data? How many Blu Ray discs would you need to back up your data? Taking into consideration the price, speed and capacity of each type of disc, compare each type to find out which would be most suitable for your backup needs and why? You should mention: a) the time it would take to backup and restore the data b) the cost of the discs c) the storage implications (e.g. it would be difficult to store 600 CD's)

Plenary Mr Davidson doesn’t like spending money. Ever!!! On your worksheet write a convincing argument to persuade him to finally upgrade to a Blu Ray drive in his PC. Explain what the benefits over CD and DVD are and give some reasons why Blu Ray may be more useful.
