SMART WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Description Smart dustbin is based on IoT. IoT is internet of things is a network of physical devices, vehicles, home automation and other items which are embedded with electronics, software, actuators, sensors, motors, etc. and are connected with each other to exchange information. Smart dustbin has sensors such as ultrasonic sensor and fire/smoke detectors. The data from these sensors will be sent to the cloud server over internet through IoT. This will also have a LCD display which will show the values from the sensors. When the dustbin will become full the display will show the location of the nearest dustbin. The dustbin will have a tri-colour LED which will show the filling status of the dustbin. The dustbin will be powered through battery/solar cells. The dustbin’s lid will be locked once the dustbin is full above a certain value.

Working The working of smart dustbin is to monitor the amount of waste in the dustbin and send this data to the cloud server via internet. The dustbin will have a microcontroller which will take the data from the sensors and transmit it to the server. It will also display the values on the LCD display. A tricolour LED will show the status of the dustbin. When the dustbin will become full the server will be informed and the lid of the dustbin will be locked using the servo mechanism. This is to stop overflowing of waste and the location of the nearest dustbin will be shown on the display. The fire/smoke detector will determine if there is any fire or smoke in dustbin.

ADVANTAGES This system will use ultrasonic sensor to calculate the filled status. This data will be send to the server and hence the status will be monitored. With the use of IoT the data can not only be collected but also monitored, analysed and further actions can be taken from anywhere in the world. This will reduce or eliminate the human involvement with the waste and hence will protect them from diseases communicated through these waste. This system will alert the authorities in case of fire or if another harmful gases are detected. With the use of this system, drivers can prepare their route plan on the start of the day. This will make the waste collection system very efficient. This system will prevent the overflow of garbage. The LCD will help to show the data to the general public also.
