LSS 1003 Life and Study Skills What is this course about?

What is life skills? (WHO- World Health Organization definition) Life skills are the abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life. 

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) divides life skills into: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) divides life skills into the following three categories:   Learning to know (cognitive abilities) which involves  decision-making, problem-solving and critical thinking skills.  Learning to be (personal abilities) which involves skills for  increasing internal control, managing emotions and handling stress.   Learning to live together (interpersonal abilities) which  involves interpersonal communication skills, empathy, co-operation and teamwork. 

Study Skills Study skills are the skills you need to enable you to study and learn efficiently – they are an important set of transferable life skills. Examples are: Time Management Note-taking Goal Setting Motivation Self Regulation Self Awareness Active listening

Course Learning Objectives CLO 1- Develop an awareness of personal identity and personality theories to understand others’ behavior in a group setting. CLO 2- Demonstrate understanding of HCT regulations, organizational structures, services and resources relevant to academic needs and personal success. CLO 3- Recognize key transitional stages in our lives and develop skills and techniques in relation to preparedness for college and work life.  CLO 4- Recognize the importance of time management, team work and effective study skills including basic research literacy and critical thinking. CLO 5- Recognize the importance of being a productive member of society both at work and in the broader community.  CLO 6- Develop an understanding of the use of digital and information literacy skills for success at college and beyond.

Model of Delivery/ Activities Face-to-face interaction (3 hours a week and 1 hour of OLZ) Use of authentic reading and listening texts Video clips/movies from various sources Individual/pair/group work Homework to prepare for class
