Television crime drama: Setting Monday 26th September 2011 Television crime drama: Setting LO: Understand how set ting contributes to television crime dramas.

Starter: Below are three different settings, what sort of crime drama would you expect to see in each? Give examples. 5 minutes. LO: Understand how set ting contributes to television crime dramas.

Sherlock Holmes is set in central London. Setting Locations can be part of a drama's appeal. They frequently determine the nature of the criminal activity and affect the tone, mood and pace of the programme. Sherlock Holmes is set in central London. What does this suggest about the types of crimes we would see in this programme? LO: Understand how set ting contributes to television crime dramas.

Midsomer Murders Midsomer Murders is a British television detective drama. The two main characters are Detectives John and Tom Barnaby. Unlike Sherlock, these are detectives that work for the police. Midsomer is an English fictional county. The county town is Causton, a middle-sized town where Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby lives with his wife and where the Criminal Investigation Department is located. Many of the villages and small towns of the county have the word Midsomer in their name; this is inspired in part by the real county of Somerset, and specifically the town of Midsomer Norton. LO: Understand how set ting contributes to television crime dramas. .

Setting Compared to Sherlock, which is set in London, Midsomer is set in rural countryside and the crimes happen in small and remote villages. How do you think the two programmes will differ? What effect will the rural setting have on the programme? LO: Understand how set ting contributes to television crime dramas.

Midsomer Murders We are now going to watch an episode of Midsomer murders. You need to make a note of the following, whilst watching: How does the setting contribute to the programme? How do the characters differ from both ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and ‘Appropriate adult’? http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=274826 LO: Understand how set ting contributes to television crime dramas.
