It’s Time to Get PEPPED UP! What Is It? Stands for Enhanced Protein-Energy Provision Via The Enteral Route in Critically Ill Patients Goal: To increase calories and protein to improve clinical outcomes How Do We Do That? Use Peptamen 1.5 because it is concentrated and well-tolerated Order feeds by 24-hour volume, rather than by hourly rate Give protein supplements every day until goal volume is being met RN sets the rate, and changes it to make up for interruptions RN reports nutritional adequacy at daily rounds Start motility agents immediately, then discontinue if not needed Gastric residual volume threshold = 300mL Use trickle feeds in unstable patients Just say no to npo It’s Time to Get PEPPED UP! For more information, contact ____________________

It’s Time to Get PEPPED UP! Goal: To  calories and protein to improve clinical outcomes Did you know? Besides NPO, there are two options on the PEP uP Protocol: Volume-based feeds (most patients) Trophic feeds (unstable patients) NPO? Only in cases where there is a contraindication to enteral nutrition Reassess daily to see if feeding can be commenced Just say no to npo It’s Time to Get PEPPED UP!
