Joanna Chikwe et al. JACC 2017;69:2397-2406 Current Status of Degenerative Mitral Valve Repair in New York State Key findings: 1) the median annual surgeon mitral volume is 10 operations; 2) wide variability of repair rates is observed among surgeons; 3) higher volume is associated with higher repair rates and better outcomes; 4) reoperation after repair is less common for patients operated on by surgeons with ≥25 mitral valve operations a year; and 5) low-volume surgeons (<25 operations/year) in institutions where high-volume, high-repair-rate surgeons (>50 operations/year and >70% repair rate) are present have improved repair rates.
