Ontario Wildflowers PART 1 (These are a part selection of the most abundant flowers found in Ontario)

Purple and White Aster Large genus, many that grow in Ontario Classic late summer, fall bloom with Goldenrod and Wild Carrot A meadow, woodland or forest edge species. Grows to about 100 cm tall.

Canada Goldenrod Goldenrod blooms in mid-September and seeds in October Goldenrod is found in meadows, along roads, ditches, and waste areas. Commonly found with purple and white aster Goldenrod is often blamed for causing hay fever in humans.

Ox Eye Daisy Ox eye daisy's is a wild spreading flowering plant. It is one of a number plants to be called by the common name Daisy. Ox eye daisy’s grow up to about 5cm in height. The ox eye daisy is a typical meadow flower, it also grows in dry fields, meadows, open-canopy forests and waste land places.

Chicory Chicory is a bushy perennial herb with blue or lavender flowers. Chicory has become a common roadside plant. Chicory is also used in salads, it has a slightly bitter taste and has been attributed with herbal properties.

Orange Hawkweed Hawkweed is part of the very large genus Hieracium in the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Hawkweed is a slang name taken from folklore which says that hawks would chew on the plant to improve their eyesight.

Burdock Is a long weedy looking plant that develops burs in later summer and fall There are two types of burdock that grow wild in Canada, common burdock and great burdock. Uses very effective strategy of seed scattering by attaching to animal fur (used to invent velcro!!!)

Bull Thistle National emblem of Scotland Goldfinches love to use the down (fluff) for nesting material Thistle seeds are also very popular with goldfinches and other birds

Wild Carrot Wild carrot is also known as Queen Anne’s Lace. Wild carrot can grow up to a meter long and it flowers from June to early September. Wild carrot is found in places like ditches, meadows,fields etc.

Bittersweet (Night Shade) Bittersweet Night Shade is a trailing or woody vine it is also part of the potato family. They can grow up to 10 feet in length. Bittersweet Night shade is found along roadsides, fences, in any woods, on cliffs and etc.
