Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: “Fairer than the sons of men” (v. 2) Isaiah 53:2b (not speaking physically) Mark 1:21-22; John 7:46 John 5:20 The Hebrew word rendered “thou art fairer” is a very unusual term. It is properly a reduplication of the word meaning “beautiful”… could be rendered “Beautiful, beautiful, are you above the children of men.” Among all who dwell, or have dwelled on the earth, there is none to be found that can be compared!

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: His language is marked by grace “Grace has poured from your lips” (v. 2) Grace: giving what man does not deserve Luke 4:22 (note: they “marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth”) People were astonished and marveled at His teachings (Mt. 7:28-29; Mt. 13:54; Mark 1:22, 27; Luke 20:26; John 7:46) Although man deserves death, Jesus taught about giving man life!

“To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: He possesses glory and majesty (v. 3) Glory: praise, honor, distinction The Father has glorified the Son (Acts 3:13; Phil. 2:9-11) 2 Peter 3:18; We should continue to glorify the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords! “To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” (2 Pt. 3:18b)

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: He possesses glory and majesty (v. 3) Majesty: sovereign power, authority, dignity; greatness or splendor of quality or characteristic; excellence Ps. 8:1, 9 (ESV) “O LORD, our LORD, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens”… “O LORD, our LORD, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: He possesses glory and majesty (v. 3) Majesty: sovereign power, authority, dignity; greatness or splendor of quality or characteristic; excellence 2 Peter 1:16-17 “For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.” In His majesty, He rides as a righteous warrior in battle array (re: Rev. 19:11-16), “because of truth, humility, and righteousness.” (Ps. 45:4)

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: He loves righteousness; hates wickedness (v. 7) Righteous: acting in accord with divine or moral law Hebrews 1:9 (quoting from Ps. 45:7) Psalm 33:4-5; The LORD loves righteousness and justice Romans 1:16-17; the righteousness of God is revealed in the Gospel of Christ

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the person of the King: He loves righteousness; hates wickedness (v. 7) Wickedness: evil or immoral Psalm 11:5; God hates the wicked person Abominations of God: Ways of the wicked (Prov. 15:9) Thoughts of the wicked (Prov. 15:26) Worship of the wicked (Prov. 15:8) Actions of the wicked (Prov. 6:18) The deeds of the wicked (Ps. 5:5) “The LORD preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy.” Psalm 145:20

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the power of the King: He will ride victoriously (v. 4) Victory prophesied from the beginning (Genesis 3:15) Christ as the victorious rider (Rev. 19:19-21) He will prosper because of His truth, humility, and righteousness He will demonstrate awesome things! His enemies shall fall before Him (v. 5) All enemies will be put under His feet (1 Cor. 15:24-28)

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the power of the King: He is the Mighty One (v. 2) In righteousness, He judges and makes war (Rev. 19:11-16) Name is “Mighty God” (Isaiah 9:6) He is the Almighty (Rev. 1:8) Holds power of life (John 5:21) Holds the power of eternal life (John 17:1-2)

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the nature of His Kingdom: His reign shall be righteous (v. 6) His scepter (symbol of authority) is of righteousness. His Kingdom shall be one of power 1 Cor. 4:20; Eph. 6:10; 2 Tim. 1:7 His reign shall be a happy one – He has been anointed with the “oil of gladness”

Discovering the King (Psalm 45:2-9) Discovering the nature of His Kingdom: He will rule for eternity (v. 6) “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever” “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Heb. 13:8)
