Ongoing Reporting Guiding Principle 2 Provide opportunities for students through feedback to reflect on their learning

In this workshop we will review the ways in which we encourage students to be engaged and thoughtful learners explore some ways in which we can help our students to become reflective learners, and how we might need to change our practice plan our next steps in making the change

Guiding Principle 2 Encourage students to have confidence in their capacity to achieve, to have a strong voice in their learning Students need to develop skills in reflective thinking so as to decide whether they have achieved their goals They will develop those skills through opportunities to engage in discussions about how well they are doing and how they might improve

What is reflective learning? Watch and reflect on the video which offers a short introduction to some key ideas about student reflection: https://vimeo.com/ncca/review/113080595/03c467f62e (Thanks to Vancouver Community College, Baking Department for permission to use this video)

A reflective session for ourselves How well does my classroom practice develop students’ reflection skills? Read through the statements on page 21 of the booklet and jot down your responses. Then Discuss your responses with a colleague or in a small group of colleagues.

For whole staff or departmental discussion How does practice within our school encourage students to reflect on their learning? What evidence would show how well our students were involved in self-reflection? How might we improve the quality of student self-reflection? How might our school take a phased approach to the introduction of student self-reflection and self-assessment?

Workshop discussion In groups, consider how useful the approaches detailed on page 22 of the booklet might be in developing your practice. Learning log The purple pen for reflection Reflection and self-talk Sharing reflections Discussion point: What are the challenges and opportunities provided by each of the above approaches?

Further supports See www.schoolself-evaluation.ie for ideas on linking these ideas to the SSE process See also NCCA’s Focus on Learning series of resources by visiting www.ncca.ie/en/junior-cycle/assessment-and-reporting/focus-on-learning

Which Guiding Principle is next for us? You have now completed the discussion on this Guiding Principle and recorded the agreed changes or action points Decide which of the Guiding Principle/s you plan to discuss next.
