Mapping of Fire Areas in East Russia using AVHRR, 1998-2001 Anatoly Sukhinin1, Eric Kasischke2, Jenny Hewson2, Nancy French3, Susan Conard4 1Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk, Russia; 2University of Maryland, College Park; 3Altarum, Ann Arbor, MI; 4USDA Forest Service, Arlington, VA Hotspot Generation: • Daily AVHRR data are used to detect the location of wildfires in East Russia • The data are processed using an algorithm designed to identify the presence of hotspots • First, a water mask is created. In addition, a cloud mask is created using albedo thresholding in channels 1 and 2 • Second, the algorithm uses a combination of differencing and thresholding of the thermal channels (AVHRR 3, 4, 5) • The hotspot algorithm is executed on daily AVHRR data throughout the fire season Burned Area Mapping: • Mapping of burn scars is achieved using end of season AVHRR data • The end of season data are targeted based on presence of a hotspot during the fire season • The visible channels (AVHRR 1, 2) are used to identify burn scars • Erdas utilities are used to digitize the boundary of a burn on the end of season AVHRR data • Burned area mapping is only achievable if suitable end of season AVHRR data are available Location of Hotspots and Burned Area for Yakutia, 2001 Location of Hotspots and Burned Area for S. Khabarovsk, 1998 Location of Hotspots and Burned Area for Evenkiyskiy, 1999 Location of Hotspots and Burned Area for Chita Region, 2000 Location of Hotspots and Burned Area for Amur Region, 2000
