We will read the handout as a class. Explore Page 16: CSI Lab We will read the handout as a class. The front of the handout is basically a key that you will use to determine the phenotypic expression of the DNA. You will follow the directions and complete the assignment individually, using your table group ONLY if you get stuck.

Scientists can engineer a monkey to glow, because it’s cool… Scientists can engineer a monkey to glow, because it’s cool… But what other reasons might they have to genetically modify organisms? Can you think of a way to modify plants/crops to help farmers? What kind of plant structures might they want to alter?

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) Examples: Putting genes from artic fish into tomatoes. Fish have codons that translate into cold resistance proteins. This can create a frost resistant crop! Putting genes from soil bacteria into corn. Some soil bacteria produce a protein which kills crop eating pests. This creates a pest resistant crop!

Cloning A genetically identical copy of a gene or organism Retro Question: What process creates a gamete? In a sheep, where does this process occur?

Gene Sequencing Determining the order of nucleotides in genes or the entire genome. Retro question: In the karyotype to the right do you see a chromosomal or a gene mutation?
