Imagery Using Sensory Detail

What is Imagery? Imagery is when an author uses words and phrases to describe a place, person, or event in such a manner that the reader feels as if he or she is experiencing the place, person, or event first hand.

What is Imagery? The best details come from closely observing the world, then using specific words that can be felt by our five senses. These help a reader mentally live through what the characters in the book are actually experiencing. What does this mean?

Imagery Examples SIGHT: The sun’s beams shimmered and danced on the ocean’s gentle waves.

SMELL: The fragrant roses drifted through the room like elusive ghosts.

SOUND: Although they could not see outside the cabin, they could hear the eerie tapping, tapping, tapping, of his knife upon their door.

TASTE: The cheesecake’s exquisite flavor traveled from his tongue to his spine.

The icy breeze gently brushed against the hair on her neck, and goose-bumps shortly followed.

Imagery Activity Close your eyes as I read a poem titled “Imagery” by Judy Anne. As I read the poem, I want you to draw the image that sticks out in your mind.

“Imagery” by Judy Anne Tree branches glisten white Pillows of snow Sun reflecting tiny crystals of light frozen in stillness.
