What is Characterization? The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.

How is Characterization Revealed? How does the reader learn about a character?

Direct Characterization tells the audience the personality of the character Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”

Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character There are 5 different methods of indirect characterization…

5 Methods of Indirect Characterization Explanation Speech What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Practice His Person: "If any personal description of me is thought desirable…it may be said I am, in height, 6'4", nearly; lean in flesh, weighing on an average 180 lbs.; dark complexion, with coarse black hair and gray eyes." It might be added that his nose was prominent and slightly askew, his heavy eyebrows overhung deep eye-caverns in which his eyes--sometimes dreamy, sometimes penetrating--were set. He had projecting--some said flapping--ears. His remarkable face never failed to make a powerful impression. As a London Times correspondent observed: "It would not be possible for the most indifferent observer to pass him in the street without notice."
