CW Paper Two Feedback Tuesday, 01 January 2019 Learning Outcomes To be able to improve my performance in a Paper Two question based upon individual and class feedback

READING AND PLANNING: 15 minutes Read the main focus of the questions first Read the two texts carefully with a pen / highlighter Question One: Choose four statements which are true… Advice: Shade within the box carefully Read the statements carefully

Question Two: Write a summary of similarities / differences of… THE BIG PICTURE: Sum up a response in one or two sentences. Both texts……..Source A…….. Whereas Source B………… Statement about Source A QUOTE: NO METHODS! Evaluate Quote using INFERENCE Comparison Marker Statement about Source B

You need to refer to Source A and Source B for this question. The effects of the weather on people in both sources are very different. Use details from both sources to write a summary of the different ways people are affected by the weather. [8 marks] Both texts are about extreme weather conditions. Source A shows the horrifying consequences of a sudden storm on Mount Everest, while Source B focuses on less dramatic heavy snowfall in London in the 1800s. Effects on people: Source A: Source B: People fight for their lives after becoming trapped Whereas Physical effects include – frozen beards, headaches and cold fingers – an inconvenience rather than a danger. People have been taken by surprised and are unprepared - e.g. running out of oxygen supplies People are very cold and have to wear warmer clothes – however, this is not life threatening.

Question Three: How does the writer use language to… THE BIG PICTURE: Sum up a response in one or two sentences… NAME METHOD The writer uses… E.g. The word/adjective/adverb Verb/simile/Metaphor/Repetition/ Personification/Oxymoron/Questions/ Exclamations/Alliteration etc. QUOTE Evaluate Quote using inference This suggests/implies/ gives the impression/ emphasises

You now need to refer only to Source A from lines 13 to 23. How does the writer use language to describe the storm? [12 marks]

Don’t forget your “Big Picture” Summary. E.g. The writer presents the weather as an extremely frightening , dangerous and destructive force, which the climbers are totally unprepared for. Now use the Formula: NAME METHOD – QUOTE - Evaluate Quote using inference Some ideas you could have included: Extended metaphor of violence / lexical field of violence Powerful verbs Personification of the storm

Question Four: Compare how the two writer convey their different attitudes to … THE BIG PICTURE: Sum up a response in one or two sentences. Both texts……..Source A…….. Whereas Source B………… POINT about an experience/attitude expressed by the writer in Source A METHOD And QUOTE This suggests/implies/ gives the impression….. USE INFERENCE POINT about an experience/attitude expressed by the writer in Source B This suggests/implies/ gives the impression…..USE INFERENCE

For this question, you need to refer to the whole of Source A, together with the whole of Source B. Compare how the writers convey their different perspectives on the extreme weather conditions.
