Rocks and Soil First, let us define the term “rocks.” What do you think are rocks??? ROCKS Minerals Solid Make up the earth

Rocks and Soil Since rocks are inclusive of the words/ phrase mentioned on the last slide, let’s form a definition: Rocks are solid structures made of minerals which make up the earth’s surface.

Formation of rocks IGNEOUS SEDIMENTARY METAMORPHIC FORMATION   IGNEOUS SEDIMENTARY METAMORPHIC FORMATION These are formed when molten material from within the earth cools and hardens. When the magma cools, it formed intrusive igneous rocks before reaching the surface. When the molten material is erupted, it is called lava. When it cools and hardens, extrusive igneous rocks are formed. These are formed from the accumulation and solidification of sediments that settle on the sea floor as well as from the accumulation of fossils. These fossils may include bones and shells of sea creatures, remains from plants as well as through the process of weathering. These are formed when igneous and sedimentary rocks are transformed due to extreme heat (from inside the earth) and pressure (from rock layers). This is known as metamorphism (which means to change). The new rock is different from the original rock in terms of physical (texture and colour) and chemical properties. EXAMPLES Granite, Basalt, Gabbro Limestone, Chalk, Shale, Sandstone Graphite, Schist, Slate, Marble
