Street Gangs

Street gangs- background A gang is a group of teens and young adults that hang out together and are involved in violence, illegal, or criminal activity. A gang may also wear their "colors", wear certain types of clothing, tattoos, brands, or likewise imprint their gang's name, logo, or other identifying marks on their bodies. Gangs generally have a leader or group of leaders who manage the gang's activities.

? Why teenagers join street gangs Many gang members come from poor and/or broken homes, and they get the support they need from gang life. Kids from the dangerous environment of inner cities often feel that they need to belong to a gang as a form of protection. Gang kids usually have a low self-esteem and sense of self-worth. ?

Schools should develop a flexible study program directed to gang members.

What should they do ? !

The program Choices is the suitable program that the schools suggest. create relationships with organizations in the community that have knowledge about the problem and provide services to deal with it. Schools should develop parenting and gang awareness classes. involve parents of gang and non-gang in the school's concerns and activities in respect to the gang problem. provide special training to administrators, teachers to increase knowledge about the gang problem and community resources.
