Life in New France Chapters 2-3

How Colonies Were Built: 1. King gives permission (charter) to investors to create a company whose only purpose is to start a colony. 2. Investors create a joint-stock company (pool resources) 3. Company sends ships, men & supplies to new land & builds settlement. Profit split among group & king given certain % for giving them permission to build the colony!

The French Come to North America Northwest Passage- fabled H2O route through North America to Asia French explore coast looking for N.W.P. Cartier- explored St. Lawrence River & inner Canada Champlain- built 1st French colony in Nova Scotia & founded Quebec- became capital of “New France”
