Quick Recap Hospers – key points for essay Honderich – key points for essay Locke – key points for essay

Buridan’s Donkey A hungry donkey is equidistant between two bales of hay. It has no way of making the decision as to which one to eat and it dies of starvation. Starter (pairs) – Imagine this was a human and you were a soft determinist and describe the picture. Ext – In what way can soft determinism be described as compatibilist?

Soft Determinism LO s To understand further the notion of soft determinism. To evaluate a range of soft deterministic viewpoints, in particular the work of David Hume To understand certain criticisms of soft determinism

David Hume Ever the 17th century ‘cleverclogs’, David Hume wittily insisted that we are determined to be free. For each of the points on the following flowchart of Hume’s argument, discuss and note down a scenario or example in pairs to help illustrate its meaning

Determined to be Free Influenced by Newton and causal restraints on objects Events determined by causal chain link between objects Called the above the ‘constant union of objects’ This then provides the foundation for human free will Given situation, you can make a decision to go one way or the other

Determined to be Free Determined situation, spontaneous decision. Calculated choice is called ‘liberty of spontaneity’ Not by chance as events are determined… And free spontaneous decisions are calculated In any given circumstance, we are determined to be free

Determined to be Free As with Buridan’s donkey, please try and draw an image/picture/scribble to illustrate Hume’s point.

Where’s Wally?
