2.14 Finding Multiple Points of View

CONNECTION True Story of the Three Little Pigs

TEACHING POINT Today I want to teach you that readers pay attention to multiple points of view by asking themselves “What are some other ways to see this story?”

TEACHING Usually one view point is very strong What are some other ways to see this?

TEACHING What about the Pony Express? What an improvement for people who wanted to send letters! What a great accomplishment to set up the system BUT…

TEACHING What do you see here in this photo of the Pony Express?

TEACHING Rider looks so young to have ridden all those miles through trial and danger! Sitting tall and proud Big accomplishment to be chosen Big mailbags—think about all the letters linking people to their loved ones! What’s the other side of the story?

TEACHING Who else is in this photo? The Pony Express wasn’t just a feat accomplished by the riders. Other people had to help—people who fed them, gave them new horses, gave them places to sleep… What is the other person’s story?

TEACHING By asking What are some other sides of the story or What other sides are not often heard, we reveal more points of view, more ways to think about the Pony Express.
