Region One Football Officials Association Rule Topics: Mercy Rule We Are All Here to Learn

TSSAA MERCY RULE NFHS Rule 3-1-2

TSSAA MERCY RULE "Beginning in 2nd half, if point differential is 35 points or more, a continuous clock will be used, except clock will stop for charged time-outs, injuries, & after scores (including field goal). The try will always be an un-timed down. Clock shall start when the ball is kicked on the kickoff. If point differential goes below 35 points, game shall revert back to regular timing rules.” ** Clock starts on ready-for-play after injury, and at start of 4th quarter Clock starts on snap after charged team time-out Clock runs on incomplete passes, out-of-bounds, change of team possession, penalty administration, dry/change game ball, & when 1st down is declared Clock does not reset & run between quarters Do NOT use words “slaughter rule” – it’s the “running clock rule” #dignity Communicated to coaches by Umpire & Back Judge (not the ECO) to respective sidelines prior to kickoff when procedure goes into effect Officials should use normal mechanics If out-of-state team is playing in TN, we play under TSSAA rules **TSSAA Handbook - Football Regulations
