Question Breakdown What is your Question? “To what extent does the government help address the issues surrounding poverty or do they create a generation more dependent on handouts?”

Highlight all the keywords within your question: For example: “To what extent does the government help address the issues surrounding poverty or do they create a generation more dependent on handouts?” 1. Identify the stem word. 2. Highlight any other words that might be important.

Try it with some of these questions: ‘How far do global influences affect the family and cause change?’ ‘How important is the continued existence of the Amazonian Rain Forest?’ ‘Explore how a certain belief system impacts on the way an individual lives their life?’ ‘How does global mobility affect a country’s culture? ‘Justify the idea that compulsory education is good for my future?’ ‘How does education contribute to a longer life expectancy?’ ‘To what extent can water shortages be dealt with on an individual level?’ ‘How does war and conflict affect the population of a country?’ ‘Explore how the internet has transformed the world we live in?’ ‘How does a legal system affect human behaviour?’ ‘How are people disadvantaged because of where they live?’

What does the Stem word mean? “To what extent does the government help address the issues surrounding poverty or do they create a generation more dependent on handouts?” 1. Use this doc to help you come up with a definition. To what extent: Evokes a similar response to questions containing ‘How far...’ This type of question calls for a thorough assessment of the evidence in presenting your argument. Explore alternative explanations where they exist. 2. Write this in your own words to help you understand it. To what extent: I need to make a judgement on how far the statement is true or not. To do so i will need to look at the different views and evidence in detail to give an answer.

What do the others tell me to look at? “To what extent does the government help address the issues surrounding poverty or do they create a generation more dependent on handouts?” What are the issues of poverty in HK? How do these relate to the world? What does dependent mean? Who is dependent? Should the government do anything? What does the government do at the moment? What are the long term consequences? 1. Do you know the meaning for all of the words? If not, use a dictionary to find out. 2. What issues/areas might these words require you to look at? 3. Your now ready to begin planning your essay:

Identify the topic and ask questions. (See last slide) Gather information to ask the questions posed. Reflect on and analyse the information gathered as identified by the question posed. Formulate possible course of action Personal response What are the issues of poverty in Hong Kong? How do these relate to the world? What does the government currently do? Does the government have a responsibility to do something? What are the short and long term consequences of helping the poor? Different sources – books, internet, CDROMs, television and radio programmes, questionnaires, interviews etc. Different perspectives – local, national, global and personal Identify and explain the causes of poverty in HK and the current situation. Identify and evaluate possible scenarios of how the government helps. What are the causes, effects and current situations? What could possible scenarios be? How likely/unlikely are these? How would they help? What action might my government, my family or I take in response to helping the poor? What possible solutions might address the changes/the scenarios? How might these courses of action changes/scenarios? Why might these scenarios not work? What is my response to the information I have used and the things I have found out? What have I learned? What might I do differently and how? How has what I have learned affected my personal perspective and why? aqz
