The Importance of the Scientific Method

Definitions OBSERVATION: making sense of something by using your senses (seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, tasting)

PREDICTION: an expected outcome of a FUTURE event Example: Based on the radar, we will have storms tomorrow.

HYPOTHESIS: What you THINK will happen. Examples: I THINK the plant will grow best when watered daily. I THINK the dog will learn the trick when you give it a treat for doing it.

4. QUANTITATIVE OBSERVATION: An observation involving measurements or numbers. Examples: We ran 3.2 miles together. I ate a four ounce apple at lunch.

5. QUALITATIVE OBSERVATION: An observation that DOES NOT involve measurements or numbers. Examples: The sky is blue. The water is cold. 6. PROPERTIES: Characteristics that distinguish one thing from another.

Examples: It’s going to rain today BECAUSE it’s cloudy outside. INFERENCE: A statement that attempts to explain or make sense of an observation. Examples: It’s going to rain today BECAUSE it’s cloudy outside. He wears glasses BECAUSE he can’t see far away. We had a quiz today to see if we learned the material.

8. MODEL: a picture or representation of the real thing supported by observations & inferences. 9. CONTROLLED EXPERIMENT: an experiment in which all variables but ONE are kept constant. (“FAIR TEST”) 10. VARIABLE: a factor that can affect the outcome of an experiment.

Independent Variable: the variable that is changed during the experiment. Dependent Variable: the variable that is effected by changing the independent variable.

2. You may not injure him in any way. Poor Fred! He was sailing along on a boat (your plastic cup) when a strong wind blew it upside-down. Fred (your candy worm) ended up on top of the upside-down boat. Unfortunately for Fred, his life preserver (your candy life preserver) is still trapped under the boat. Your job is to place the life preserver firmly around Fred’s body, but you must obey three rules: 1. Fred may not fall into the “sea” (onto the table) more than one time; if he does, Fred “drowns.” 2. You may not injure him in any way. 3. You may use only the four paper clips to move Fred, the boat, and the life preserver. You may not touch anything except the paper clips.
