Les évaluations BI 2016-2017

L’orale individuel ● Internally assessed, 20% weight of final score ● Will take place in early february during 1st, 2nd, and 4th periods ● Student will be given choice of two previously unseen photos, each with title/caption, based on one of the IB options: cultural diversity, customs and traditions, health, leisure, science and technology. (BI 5: 1 photo)

L’orale individuel ● Student will have 15 minutes to reflect and prepare a notecard with about 10 bullet points. ● Student will describe the scene and situation, and offer their interpretation of it, for 3-4 minutes. ● Teacher will ask follow-up questions, and student will respond, for 5-6 minutes. ● Teacher will grade and submit recorded orals; IB will evaluate teacher’s grading accuracy via five random selections.

Le travail écrit - SL ● Externally assessed, 20% weight of final score ● Will take place in school in early March over one week’s worth of class periods Students may also work on this outside of class - at home, etc. ● Prior to the exam, with teacher’s guidance, students will choose 3-4 media resources of 300-400 words each (articles, interviews, blogs) based on one specific topic drawn from the core: communications and media, social relationships, global issues.

Le travail écrit - SL Student will decide upon a text purpose (e.g., to persuade the reader to take a certain view of the topic) and a text type (e.g., a series of emails, a newspaper article, a journal entry, a brochure, tweets, a letter, etc.). This may be done in advance of the exam week.

Le travail écrit - SL ● Student will then create their original text incorporating information from all 3-4 sources. ● 300-400 words, plus a 150 word rationale explaining their choice of text purpose and text type, and how their purpose was fulfilled. ● Printed (dictionaries, verb conjugation tables) and electronic (just not translation tools) resources are fine I can give limited verbal feedback on a draft

Le travail écrit - SL ● The goal, according to IB: “demonstrate understanding of the topic, organize the info from the sources in a manner appropriate to the text type, present the info without copying, and use appropriate language.” i.e.: a coherent piece of writing in an obvious and recognizable text type that demonstrates understanding of a topic, has appropriate characteristics of and language for the text type, and paraphrases (doesn’t cite) the sources.

Le travail écrit - HL ● Externally assessed; 20% weight of final score. ● Will take place the same week as SL’s task ● Student will write a creative piece of text based on any work, or any two works, of literature read in BI 4/5 (Aucassin et Nicolette (?), la Parure, Huis Clos, les Lais de Marie de France)

Le travail écrit - HL ● 500-600 words plus a 200 word rationale that states your aim and how you achieved it. ● You may choose from the same list of text types as SL (journal entry, letter, etc.), plus some others. ● Some possibilities suggested by IB: a new ending or an epilogue to a story, an interview with a character, a journal entry by one of the characters, correspondence between two characters from different works.

Le travail écrit - HL ● The same working parameters as SL (i.e. inside and outside of class, printed and/or electronic reference material, limited verbal feedback from me) ● You must include a bibliography for the work(s) on which your writing is based.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 ● Externally assessed, 25% weight each (50% total). ● Will take place May 18th and 19th, over a period of 3 hours (1.5 hours each day). These are the very last IB exams this year. ● Paper 1: reading texts and answering questions, based on core topics of communications and media, social relationships, and global issues.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 ● Paper 1: four texts (SL) or five texts (HL), some simple/short and some long/more complex, with a set of questions for each. ○ Texts could be interviews, blogs, articles, letters, etc. ○ Questions could be matching, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, identifying references (e.g. pronouns), etc. ○ Similar format to French B Course Companion.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 ● Paper 2: students will choose one of five written task prompts, based on the options: cultural diversity, customs and traditions, health, leisure, science and technology. ○ Each prompt will require its response in a specific format (i.e. blog/letter/journal/etc).

Paper 1 and Paper 2 ● Paper 2: HL will have an additional task: reading a “stimulus” text based on the core topics, and responding in a text type of your choosing. There is no prescribed answer; this is meant to be an example of your writing and thinking skills. ● 150-250 words.

Some Text Type Examples Used for le travail écrit SL and Paper 2. ● An editorial is an expression of the (impersonal) opinion of the editor or editorial team of a newspaper or magazine about a recent event or current issue. ● An interview is a dialogue in question- and-answer style. It may include a brief introduction to the interviewee, setting or circumstances of the interview. ● A journalistic review is a review of a book, film, television or radio program that is suitable for inclusion in a newspaper or magazine. It is based on the author’s experience and is subjective.

● A magazine article is a non-fictional text written to inform readers about a particular subject or issue in some detail. ● An opinion column is the part of a newspaper or journal devoted to the expression of journalists’ or readers’ opinions. ● A speech is delivered to a specific audience, and generally persuasive in nature. ● A brochure/ leaflet/pamphlet provides descriptive information to inform, sell or raise awareness about a certain issue. ● A short story or narration (for the written assignment at HL) may be a chapter or section of a text written by the student, or an additional chapter or alternative ending to an existing novel or novella. ● A play (for the written assignment at HL) may be a short play or scene written by the student, or an additional scene(s) to an existing play.
