What is a Solar Eclipse?

Now it is Time to Demonstrate... I need three volunteers.

How Can We Safely See the Eclipse? Watching a solar eclipse is a memorable experience, but looking directly at the sun can seriously damage your eyes. Staring at the sun for even a short time without wearing the right eye protection can damage your retina permanently. It can even cause blindness. There is only one safe way to look directly at the sun, whether during an eclipse or not, through special-purpose solar filters. These solar filters are used in “eclipse glasses.” Don’t worry….Dr. Benfield has purchased you your very own pair!

Time to Go Outside Please stay with your class. Once you are outside, put your solar glasses on and look up at the sky. You may not be able to see anything just yet, because remember the eclipse starts around 10 and will reach us around 2:30. Please share what you have learned with your friends and family when you get home! Remember, this happened 100 years ago...science is so cool!
