Best Practices: iPad Management in the Classroom Presented By: Pam Nicholson & Meredith Boullion 

Suggested Settings & Restrictions to Set BEFORE Student Use

iPad Management Tips Keep track of which student is using which iPad If something inappropriate occurs with an iPad, this will help with tracking down who was responsible. Keep a list of which student uses which iPad in each class. . Let students know they will be held accountable for the condition of their assigned iPad. Briefly inspect the iPads at the end of each use to check for damage. Look at which apps are open to see if students were staying on task. Have students sign in to the Wifi when they get the ipad. Set a routine for how students should get iPads at the start of class and put them away at the end of class. Part of routine should be making sure all iPads are returned and inspected by the teacher at the end of class. Have students sign-out of Wifi by going to Settings/Wifi/CPSB-Secure/Forget the Network.  Face Down Use this instruction to get student attention away from the iPads and on you during instructional time. iPad on the Desk/Table in flat or slightly elevated position when being used. This allows you to see what the students are doing on the iPad at all times Do not let students use the iPad in their lap where the desk/table can hide what they are doing. When not being used, iPad should be on the inside corner of the desk or center of the table. iPad Management Tips 

iPad Management Tips Sharing iPads Place the iPad between two people or in the center of the group when sharing. Only one student "pilots" at a time or take turns. Two students should not be trying to touch the screen at the same time. Assign jobs (or ask students to work out jobs) when sharing the iPad. For example, one student might input text and another might take pictures or video. Mute Teach students how to mute the iPad unless sound is needed for a lesson. Keep iPad muted at all times or keep earphones plugged in at all times. Headphones Obtain headphones for each iPad or ask students to bring their own headphones. Headphone splitters can also be used for sharing the iPad. Do not share earbuds due to germs. Volume Tell students how many sound bars are appropriate for use with headphones and for listening "out loud". iPad Management Tips 

5 Creative Ways to use iPad Backgrounds in the Classroom Use custom iPad wallpapers to number the iPads. (Sample from Teacher Pay Teachers) (Samples and directions from Tony Vincent)  Group students in collaborative groups by iPad numbered background.  Review the iPad rules and expectations each month and change out iPad wallpaper backgrounds afterwards. Use numbered iPad background and screens to choose students to share via a projection hook up such as apple tv or AirServer. Set iPad wallpaper lock screens to display the rules and expectations of the iPads that way every time students "swipe right" or "press to unlock" they are agreeing to those rules. 5 Creative Ways to use iPad Backgrounds in the Classroom Link

Suggested iPad Procedures for Students How students handle the iPads Always carry with two hands. No "tug of war" with the iPad. Only one student "pilots" the iPad at a time, even when collaborating. Use only the apps you've been instructed to use No "free" internet browsing. No installing or deleting apps on the iPad Care and upkeep of iPads Hands should be clean when using the iPad Do not set the iPad near liquids, food, or objects of extreme heat Never spray liquid on the iPad or iPad case. Use a soft cloth, such as one used for cleaning glasses, to clean the screen on a regular basis.  Use a dry cloth to clean the iPad cover. An alcohol wipe can be used to disinfect the touch surface of the iPad if it has a cover on it. The cover can be cleaned with an alcohol wipe also. Students should know it is expected that they will immediately report any damage to or malfunction of the iPads or their covers. Have consequences for inappropriate use and enforce them consistently. Be sure you are on the CPSB Secure wi-fi and that your Bluetooth is on. Guided Access * An alternative to Apple Classroom for app access. Turn On Guided Access Tap Settings Tap General Tap Accessibility Under Learning, tap Guided Access Slide the Guided Access slider to ON Tap Set Passcode to set the passcode you will use to enable and disable Guided Access.   Make this something you can remember but something students will not guess. This code cannot be recovered without wiping the entire device, so make it something you can remember! Go back to the iPad Home Screen. Open the app you want to use with students Triple-click the Home button to launch Guided Access and select the options for limiting students' interaction with this app and the iPad. If you also have triple-click VoiceOver enabled, the Accessibility Optionsmenu appears, and you have to tap Guided Access. If you are just trying to keep students from accessing other apps while using this app: Tap Start in the top right corner If you want to enable other restrictions within this app: To prevent students from accessing parts of screen within the app, draw a circle/rectangle around that part of the screen To turn off the accelerometer (e.g. automatic screen orientation when the iPad is turned portrait to landscape), slide the Motion slider to OFF To turn off touch and prevent students from interacting with the iPad, slide the Touch slider to OFF Guided Access * An alternative to Apple Classroom for app access.

Guided Access End Guided Access for an App While you are in Guided Access for an app, triple-click the Home button. Enter the passcode you selected when you set up Guided Access. Notice that you can tap Resume in the top right corner to resume Guided Access for this app. Tap End in the top left corner to end Guided Access for this app. Turn Off (Completely Disable) Guided Access Tap Settings Tap General Tap Accessibility Under Learning, tap Guided Access Slide the Guided Access slider to OFF The next time you want to use Guided Access, you will be prompted to set up a new Guided Access passcode. Guided Access
