EDWARD “TED” KENNEDY 1932-2009 KENNEDY WAS A DEMOCRATIC SENATOR FROM MASSACHUSSETS. HE SERVED FOR 46 YEARS. HE WAS THE BROTHER TO PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY, AND ROBERT F. KENNEDY, BOTH OF WHOM WERE ASSASSINATED IN THE 1960'S.

KENNEDY'S LEGACY KENNEDY'S MAJOR WORK WAS CENTERED AROUND HEALTHCARE EDUCATION ENDING APARTHEID CIVIL RIGHTS AIDS RESEARCH MENTAL HEALTH IMMIGRATION HE WAS THE VOICE FOR “THE LITTLE GUY”

Ted Kennedy: The Greatest Kennedy?

Kennedy's Two Great Legacies Kennedy was the greatest Kennedy because of his willingness to work in a bipartisan fashion. Bills such as No Child Left Behind, and the Medicare Prescription Drug Program were passed due to the influence of Kennedy. No Child Left Behind emphasizes accountability for results, more choices for parents, greater local control and flexibility, and an emphasis on best practices. The Medicare Prescription Drug Program provides people who have very high prescription drug costs.

Kennedy: Healthcare and Education These two programs, centered around education and healthcare make Kennedy one of the most important Senators, and the greatest Kennedy of all time. Education and healthcare are two of the most important issues of our time!

KENNEDY AND HEALTH CARE REFORM POLITICAL CARTOON: KENNEDY AND HEALTH CARE REFORM This cartoon deals with Ted Kennedy and the car represents the healthcare reform debate. In addition this cartoon represents Ted Kennedy driving off a bridge in Chappaquiddick. His female passenger died in the wreck when he failed to report it to authorities. The devices used by the cartoonist include a sinking car and an elephant which represents Republicans. The viewpoint of the cartoon is that Republicans want nothing to do with a “sinking” healthcare reform movement.

Lockerbie Bomber Returned to Libya Despite U.S. Objections

Site of devastation of the crash in Lockerbie, Scotland. •Abdelbeset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi, the only person ever convicted for the killing of 270 people in the 1988 bombing of a plane over Lockerbie, Scotland was released from a Scottish prison on August 20, 2009 to return to Libya. •The Scottish authorities allowed al Megrahi to return to his home country on compassionate grounds since he has terminal cancer and only a few months to live. •Of the 270 people on board flight 103, 189 were Americans. This was the worst terrorist attack against U.S. citizens up until September 11, 2001. • The United States government contacted the Scottish government before al Megrahi’s release to object and indicate that his release would be a mistake. • Documents released recently indicate that the release of al Megrahi was probably part of a deal for oil. Letters going back to 2007 reveal that the British government was considering including al Megrahi in a prisoner swap because of national interest. • Families of the victims of flight 103 and U.S. officials have expressed outrage at al Megrahi’s release. • Although President Obama asked that al Megrahi be kept under house arrest in Libya, he was welcomed as a hero upon his arrival there. • During Libya’s 4oth anniversary celebration of the coup which put Moammar Gadhafi’s in power, a video clip showing al Megrahi’s return was shown which further angered U.S. government officials and family members. • This incident is likely to strain relations between the United States, and British and Libyan governments.
