Note Taking is for Sissies! All information is taken from “How to Study” by Kenneth E. Standley

Why should I take notes? I can remember just as much if I listen carefully! False! Studies have shown that… In 15 minutes you will forget 50% of what you heard in class. After 24 hours, you will have forgotten more than 60% After 2 weeks, you will have forgotten 80%!

It would be better if I just tape recorded what teachers say in class! False! Studies have shown that fewer than 7% of students ever listen to lessons recorded on tape. As well, if you rely on a tape recorder in class, you will not listen or pay attention to what is being said.

False! Taking notes will interfere with my listening! Studies have shown that that students who take notes in class score higher on tests. As well, students’ long term memory was improved. Students who take notes and study them just once a week can recall as much as 90% more of a lecture after 6 weeks than students who do not take notes.

A spiral notebook is the best thing to use to take notes in class! False! A three-ring binder helps you organize your notes. Use the front side of paper only – use the back for additional notes. A binder allows you to add handouts and assignments.

False! It’s best if I retype my notes while studying. Actually this makes your studying more difficult as you’re trying to concentrate on two activities at the same time.

I’ll just write down the main ideas – that’s all I’ll need for tests and learning. False! You need supporting details and examples to help you learn and understand a topic.

I’m not going to read the textbook until after the class – I’ll just get bored. False! Often a lecture follows the textbook closely. By reviewing the work before class, you’ll already be familiar with the material and it will be easier to follow.
