Learning Objectives Gain a better understanding of how recruiting, training, and communication can drive lodge success Best practices and methods to overcome challenges are shared between Advisers Attendees will come away with at least one goal in each area of recruiting, training, and communication.

What’s the “it” that we’re starting?

Some of the “Its”…of course there are more Some of the “Its”…of course there are more! For some, “IT” is a start, for others, a continuation… Fulfilling the Order’s (four) purposes and mission! Provide meaningful life-time experiences that provide service and fellowship Growing exposure to the rich experiences of camping, BSA’s High Adventure bases, and OA programs Integrating FUN with learning important life lessons Bringing the scouting experience to more people Build on our Founder’s visions

What have been some of the components of “IT” success in your lodge? everyone is on-board and committed to a goal build awareness & excitement FUN is built in through involvement resources maximized traditions or innovations training pride, inspiration, loyalty, service to others recognition

3 Keys to Success for Advisers Guide youth in implementation of OA program(s) In working with the Lodge Chief and LEC Advises youth in recruiting youth leadership and recruits adults for advisers Ensures that ongoing quality training takes place Prioritizes communication & follow-up to the top

How do you recruit leadership How do you recruit leadership? (share your successes and challenges within your group) What are clues to look for? When do you do it? How did you do it? What got in the way? How do you keep it going? Is it the same with youth or adults? Breakout #1 Your group will identify some pieces to the puzzle of recruiting youth and adult leadership and how you dealt with them (10 minutes discuss) (2 minutes to share out) (2 minutes Q & A) write down your 1 goal to improve recruiting leadership

some common traits of our future leaders: they step up or volunteer first willingness and desire to learn they are receptive to feedback understand the concepts well adaptable bring out the best in others eager to learn about self and others have integrity (admit mistakes and learn from them)

What does your lodge’s training look like What does your lodge’s training look like? (share your successes and challenges within your group) When do you have it? Who gets it? What does it cover? Method of delivery? Practical (hands on)? Resources for it? Breakout #2 Your group will discuss components of your lodge’s training picture including pros and cons (10 minutes discuss) (2 minutes to share out) (2 minutes Q & A) write down your 1 goal to improve your lodge’s training

Effective training includes: Knowledge base established Learning objectives are clearly stated Clear expectations during and afterward There is an understanding of competency Includes repetitive practice

How does your team communicate? Purpose? Method? Frequency? Who’s involved? On same page? Follow-up? Breakout #3 Your group will discuss how to maintain effective communication and overcoming challenges (10 minutes discuss) (2 minutes to share out) (2 minutes Q & A) write down your 1 goal to improve your lodge’s communication

Great communication… Is understanding that communication is a skill Is consistent Requires attentiveness Is multidirectional Keeps stress in check Includes understanding it on three levels- the words we choose, how we say them, and our body language when we say them

What are the 3 keys to making your Advising life easier and more productive? Keep an Eagle’s eye out for potential leadership and then empower them. Training is at the heart of Scouting and the OA. It is necessary and ongoing for everyone. Communication and Follow-up need to be at the top of your list of “to-do’s.”

As Lodge Advisers, you have the unique capacity to inspire and move large numbers of people to action…that’s “IT!”
